Polished, Ground and Honed Concrete
Polished concrete turns a structural slab into a finished floor. By grinding the surface with progressively finer diamond tooling, the concrete can be taken from a dull grey to anything from a soft matt to a reflective sheen, and the stone inside the slab can be left hidden, lightly revealed or fully exposed. Honed concrete uses similar grinding for outdoor areas and pool surrounds, where a smoother, flatter look is wanted without a slippery shine. Polished, ground and honed: the terms explained
The industry uses several overlapping terms. Broadly:
- •Mechanically polished concrete is ground and then polished through a series of finer diamond grits, often with a densifier to harden the surface, to create a sheen in the concrete itself.
- •Grind and seal means the surface is ground to the desired level of exposure, then a topical sealer provides the sheen and protection.
- •Honed concrete is ground to a smooth, flat finish without high polishing, commonly used outdoors, around pools and on steps where slip resistance matters.
Each has pros and cons for appearance, maintenance and grip. We'll explain which suits your space.
Levels of aggregate exposure
How deeply the surface is ground decides how much stone you see:
- •Cream (minimal exposure). Only the surface paste is polished, giving a smooth, uniform look with little visible stone.
- •Salt and pepper. Light grinding reveals fine sand and small aggregate specks.
- •Full exposure. Deeper grinding reveals the larger stones in cross-section for a terrazzo-like effect.
For new slabs intended for polishing, the aggregate can be selected in advance, and the pour and finishing can be planned to suit the level of exposure you want.
Where polished and honed concrete is used
Living areas
Open-plan living, kitchens and hallways in new homes and extensions. It's easy to keep clean, with no grout lines or carpet fibres to trap dust. It's hard underfoot, so rugs are common in living areas.
Garages, workshops and studios

New slabs versus existing floors
New slabs designed for polishing
The best results usually come from planning early. The slab's concrete mix, aggregate, finishing and protection during construction all affect the final floor. Slabs for polishing need to be protected from trades during the build. Plaster, paint, oil and scratches can all show up after grinding. Existing floors
Many renovations uncover concrete under old carpet, tiles or timber. These floors can often be ground and polished, but results vary with the slab's condition: glue residue, patches, cracks, old repairs and past plumbing work can all show through. We'll look at the floor and set realistic expectations before quoting. Cracks can be filled, but they usually remain visible as part of the character of the floor. See crack repairs.
The polishing process
- 01Assessment. We check the slab's flatness, condition, hardness and any coatings or adhesives.
- 02Preparation. Coatings and glue are removed, and cracks and holes are filled.
- 03Grinding. Coarse diamond tooling grinds the surface to the chosen level of exposure.
- 04Densifying. A densifier is applied to harden the surface, where the system calls for it.
- 05Honing and polishing. Progressively finer grits refine the surface to the chosen sheen.
- 06Sealing or guarding. A penetrating sealer or guard is applied to help resist stains.
Grinding is noisy, and dust control matters, especially inside homes. We use dust-control methods suited to the space.
Caring for polished concrete
Sweep or dust-mop regularly to remove grit that can scratch. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner, and wipe up spills such as wine, citrus, vinegar and oil promptly, as acids can etch the surface. High-traffic areas may need periodic re-treatment over time.

Polished concrete indoors is generally fine when clean and dry, but it can become slippery when wet. For outdoor and wet areas, honed finishes and suitable treatments are used to improve grip.
