Scoresby Concrete

Driveways, paths & slabs across Scoresby

Scoresby is a suburb that mixes two very different kinds of property: quiet residential streets of family homes, and some of the largest industrial estates in the City of Knox. Rowville Concrete arranges concreting for both, from a new exposed aggregate driveway on a suburban block to an apron outside a warehouse roller door. Scoresby is about 4.8 km north of Rowville, so we're close by for site visits and quoting. Quoting is free, and there's no obligation to proceed.

Scoresby at a glance

Scoresby was surveyed in 1857 and named after William Scoresby, the Arctic explorer who visited the colony to study terrestrial magnetism. A township grew in the 1870s around the corner of Stud Road and Ferntree Gully Road, and once the swampy ground was drained, market gardens followed. Today the suburb is home to around 6,000 people (6,066 at the 2021 Census), plus a large employment base in its industrial estates, including the Australian headquarters of Nintendo.

Locals know Scoresby Village for its shopping, Caribbean Gardens and Caribbean Lake, the Caribbean Rollerama, and the Scoresby Recreation Reserve. Scoresby borders Rowville, Knoxfield, Wantirna South, Glen Waverley and Wheelers Hill.

Homes in Scoresby and the concreting they need

At the 2021 Census, more than 96% of Scoresby's occupied dwellings were separate houses, one of the highest shares in the area. Just over 43% had four or more bedrooms. Fewer than one in twenty homes were townhouses or flats. That profile is very different from suburbs like Boronia or Glen Waverley, where subdivision has added many townhouses.

For a suburb of freestanding family homes, the jobs we expect to be most common are (our inference from the housing data):

  • Driveway replacement and upgrades. Many detached homes still have their original plain concrete or older driveways. Replacing a cracked driveway with exposed aggregate or coloured concrete is one of the most visible upgrades you can make. Driveway replacement →
  • Wider or relocated crossovers. Families with several cars often want a wider driveway, which can mean altering the council crossing. Vehicle crossovers →
  • Side paths and bin areas. A continuous path down the side of a house makes bins, hoses and garden access much easier. Paths and footpaths →
  • Shed and garage slabs. Larger backyards often mean a garden shed, workshop or carport. Shed slabs →
  • Patios and entertaining areas. Replacing tired pavers or a timber deck with a concrete patio. Concrete patios →

Business and industrial concreting in Scoresby

Scoresby's industrial estates are home to a range of national and international businesses. Industrial properties need regular concrete work: loading aprons that crack under trucks, carpark sections that need replacing, internal floor repairs, and new slabs when a warehouse is extended or fitted out. We can arrange saw-cutting, section replacement, new slabs with formwork and reinforcement, and concrete pumping where access is tight. Work can be planned around your operating hours where possible. Knox Council rules for Scoresby driveways and crossovers

Scoresby is in the City of Knox, so any work on the vehicle crossing (the section of driveway between the kerb and your property boundary) falls under Knox's road reserve rules. Knox requires a Road Opening Permit before anyone excavates in the road reserve, and that includes building a vehicle crossing.

Knox's guideline for new vehicle crossings sets out location rules that matter on Scoresby's busier roads. A new crossing must be at least 9 metres from a local road intersection and 18 metres from an intersection with a main road. So if your home sits near a corner of Stud Road, Ferntree Gully Road or another main road, the position of a new or relocated crossing may be limited. The guideline also sets a minimum crossing width of 2.8 metres. Crossings need to be kept 3 metres clear of street trees and 1 metre from other assets such as pits and poles.

The permit application needs a site plan showing trees, pits, kerb, drains and other assets. If you're on a collector, industrial or link road (which may include streets in Scoresby's industrial estates), a traffic management plan is also needed. A council officer inspects the site, and if the application is approved the permit is emailed, usually within five business days.

We'll check these details for your property and let you know what's needed before work is booked. Knox's current requirements are on its working in road reserves page.

Ground conditions and drainage

Scoresby's history includes swampy ground that had to be drained before market gardens could be established. We haven't found a published source that describes today's soil conditions street by street, and we won't guess. What we do know from published geotechnical research is that Melbourne's soils vary widely, even within the same soil type. That's why slabs should be built to a site classification, and why subgrade preparation and drainage get careful attention on every job. For driveways and paths, that means a well-compacted crushed-rock base, correct falls, and planning where stormwater will go.

Scoresby is also, according to Wikipedia, wetter than the Melbourne CBD and suburbs to the north. That makes good surface drainage around paths and patios especially worthwhile.

Finishes that suit Scoresby homes

Most Scoresby homes are brick or rendered family houses, which pair well with:

  2. 02Written quote: an itemised quote that sets out what's included, with no pressure.
  3. 03Permits: where the crossover is involved, the Knox permit is arranged before excavation.
  4. 04Preparation: removal of old concrete, excavation, base, formwork and reinforcement.
  5. 05Pour and finish: concrete placed and finished, and control joints cut.
  6. 06Curing and hand-over: clear advice on when you can walk and drive on the new concrete.

Scoresby concreting FAQs

If the widening involves the vehicle crossing in the road reserve, Knox requires a Road Opening Permit, and its guidelines treat alterations and widening as needing written approval. Work that stays entirely within your property doesn't touch the crossing rules, though other approvals may apply in some cases.

Knox's guideline allows one crossing per rateable property. New crossings must also be at least 18 metres from a main road intersection and 9 metres from a local road intersection. We can check your frontage against these rules before you plan anything.

Yes. We can quote on aprons, carpark repairs, floor sections and new slabs for industrial and commercial properties, including section replacement and saw-cutting.

We can get close, especially with exposed aggregate if the stone type is known, but new concrete rarely matches weathered concrete exactly. Sealing both can help even out the look.
